As an avid reader of Dostoyevski, I have long been fascinated by Russia and Russian literature especially in the 19th century and especially the intellectual controversies about the extreme beliefs in the dominions of science and religion. Also, as a fan of 19th century romantics like Mary Shelly, Keats, and the Brontes, and of predictions of the apocalypse, the title alone convinced me to read this book. And I was delighted and inspired by what I found. My only complaint is that such a broad subject left me feeling at times as if I were skimming over issues and people I would have loved to stay with longer. Still, I gave it five stars because I wish everybody would read it, as the subject matter and Mr. Lachman’s take on it is enlightening, especially in light of the current condition of our “civilization”.
